Dragonsteps
Overview
While looking through M.A.I.L. to find interesting weaves, I found Dragonsteps by 925maille, who came up with it while making Shenanigans. Dragonsteps is a member of the European and Helm weave families and related to the Dragonscale weave. Should you wish to try making it yourself, I recommend 925maille’s tutorial.
Materials
For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings made by hand from 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire purchased from The Ring Lord. The smaller rings have an ID of 5mm for an AR of 3.1. The larger rings have an ID of 8mm for an AR of 4.9.
Notes
Dragonsteps is only somewhat complex to understand, and if you have experience with similar Helm weaves, it should be fairly easy to grasp. The weave can be a bit tricky to start; keeping it stable at the beginning is important, as the rings take some time to lock into place. Adding the small rings so the large ring orbits them can also be challenging; however, flipping the large ring out of the way, inserting the small rings, flipping the large ring back, and then adding a new large ring makes the process easier. Dragonsteps has a flat, wide cross-section, making it well-suited for chokers, bracelets, and cords. It is very similar to Orbital Vipera Beerus Lace, with the main difference being that the small rings running down the center of the large rings do not weave through each other. While the weave can be tricky to learn, its attractive appearance and versatility make it worth adding to your repertoire.
