Overview

While looking for new weaves to try, I came across Valarias Dragonspine as posted to M.A.I.L. by starweaver. This member of the European family is a fun chain variant of European 4-in-1, which adds orbital rings to the center line. If you wish to make this yourself, I found this tutorial by Aussie Maille very helpful.

Materials

For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings. The smaller rings, purchased from The Ring Lord, are made from 18 SWG Copper wire with an ID of 3/16” for an AR of 3.4. The larger rings, which I made myself, are made from 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire with an ID of 8mm for an AR of 4.9.

Notes

The Valarias Dragonspine weave isn’t too difficult to understand, but it can be tricky to make since the large rings at the ends of the chain tend to shift out of place. Starting with a longer strip of 4-in-1 chain can help. Despite the difficulty, the weave looks very nice, and with its flat and wide cross-section, it is well-suited for making chokers, bracelets, and straps. While it can be challenging to construct, its strong aesthetic appeal and practical use make it worthwhile for intermediate maillers or anyone with steady hands.
