Overview

While searching for a new weave to try, I found Half Byzantine Plus One, uploaded to M.A.I.L. by Raevyn. This member of the European weave family is a variant of Byzantine, made from half units joined together by larger rings. I recommend this tutorial by oneringshortofafullcoil for those who wish to follow along at home.

Materials

For the sample piece showcased in this post, I used two sizes of rings made by hand from 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire purchased from The Ring Lord. The smaller rings have an ID of 5mm for an AR of 3.1. The larger rings have an ID of 8mm for an AR of 4.9.

Notes

The Half Byzantine Plus One weave is easy to both understand and create. It uses half Byzantine units connected by larger rings, which likely inspired its name. The Byzantine sections look nice, but in my opinion, the gaps formed by the larger connecting rings make the overall appearance a bit plain. As a chain weave with a rectangular cross-section, it works well in bracelets, chokers, necklaces, and strapping. The spacing of the larger rings also makes it a good candidate for claspless bracelets when using rubber rings. While its aesthetic appeal may be moderate, the ease of construction, simplicity of learning and broad range of applications make this an easy weave to recommend learning.
