Overview

While digging through M.A.I.L. for interesting new weaves, I found Coyote Maille, with no listed creator. This intriguing member of the European and Mage families is essentially a sheet variant of Box Chain 4-in-1. If you want to make it yourself, I recommend this tutorial by MaxumX.

Materials

For the sample piece showcased in this post, I made the rings myself. I used 16 SWG Bright Aluminum wire from The Ring Lord coiled around a 5mm mandrel (for an approximate ID of 5mm) for an AR of 3.1.

Notes

Coyote Maille is not difficult to learn, though starting it can be a bit tricky. After the first unit, it begins to take shape, and by the second unit, it holds together well and becomes much easier to continue. I find the weave looks very nice in all orientations, though it looks best when under tension, as the loose edges can distract from its overall aesthetic appeal. It is a sheet weave with a fairly thick profile and small unit size. It is highly flexible along its length but less so along its width, making it well-suited for bracelets, bands, chokers, or fabric-like panels in larger projects. Its main drawback, in my opinion, is the high ring count required; the sample in the photos is only about 6 cm (2.5 in) long. Overall, it’s a solid weave that isn’t too hard to learn or create, offers a variety of potential uses, and looks quite good, so I recommend learning how to make it despite the small size and high ring usage.
